Overview
The Place order earning rule is the core driver of Growave’s Points program. It automatically rewards customers with loyalty points or store credit when they make a purchase.
⚠️ Important: Only one Place order rule can exist in your rewards program at any time.
Key benefits
By rewarding customers with points or store credit proportionally for their spending, you directly incentivize repeat purchases, increase customer lifetime value (LTV), and build long-term retention.
Plan availability
Rewarding with Points is available on all plans (including Free).
Rewarding with Store credit is available starting from the Growth plan and higher.
Multipliers
Multipliers automatically boost the reward amount in points or store credit issued for the Place order action. When a customer qualifies for several multipliers, only one multiplier will apply based on the following priority:
Birthday multiplier (Highest priority): Bonus points/store credit for purchases made on the customer's birthday.
Boost campaign multiplier (Medium priority): Promotional points/store credit multipliers.
VIP tier multiplier (Lowest priority): Extra points/store credit based on the customer's VIP status.
📘 Note: Birthday and Boost campaign multipliers apply only to the Place order action. VIP Tier multipliers apply globally to all active earning actions where the reward is set to points or store credit.

Main settings of the Place order action
Reward type
You can configure the Place order rule to issue one of two reward types:
Points: Rewards are added directly to the customer's loyalty balance.
Note: Points expiration is managed separately under Rewards → Settings → Points expiry. See our guide on managing points expiration.
Store credit (variable): Reward is issued as a monetary store credit balance based on the customer's total spend (e.g. $1 store credit for every $10 spent).
Store credit lifetime (days): Set how long the issued store credit remains valid. Unused credit expires automatically after this period.
Earning value
Defines the reward-to-spend ratio.
Example (Points): Earn 1 point for every $1 spent.
Example (Store credit): Earn $1 store credit for every $20 spent.
📖 Learn how to determine optimal point values in our guide on choosing point values.
Limit how many times a customer can get a reward
Controls how often a customer can earn points for placing orders. You can limit repetitions per lifetime, day, week, month, or year.
Set minimum purchase amount
Defines the lowest order total required to trigger the reward.
Calculation metric: Validated against the Order total (Subtotal − Discounts + Shipping + Taxes) minus any Excluded product costs.
Global settings interaction: While global settings, like excluding taxes or shipping from Rewardable amount calculation, affect the final points earned, they do not affect whether the order total qualifies for this minimum threshold check. See How rewards are calculated, issued, and canceled in Growave for more details.
Delay the reward
Delays the point or store credit distribution for a set number of days.
⚠️ Important: If you set a delay period for issuing a reward, the delay may reset when the order is updated. For example, if the order status progresses (when multiple statuses are selected in Reward management) or if items are added to the order, removed, or refunded.
Available exclusively for customers with listed tags
Restricts the rule to specific customer segments using Shopify customer tags.
⚠️ Important: If a customer does not have the required tag, the related storefront widgets and checkout extensions are hidden to avoid confusing ineligible users.
Customer experience
Depending on you Growave plan, the following storefront widgets, account and checkout extensions can be displayed to customers where they interact with the Place order action:
Rewards pop-up widget: Displays under Points program → How to earn points section with a dedicated card showing the point rate. On click, unfolds the description with a Shop now button that redirects the user to the general catalog (
/collections/all).Rewards page: Displays in the Ways to earn points grid with a card showing the points rate and a Shop now button. Clicking the button opens a modal with the rule title, points rate, description, and Shop now button that redirects the user to the general catalog (
/collections/all).Rewards page extension for new customer account pages: Displays in the Ways to earn points grid with a card showing the points rate and a Shop now link. Clicking the button opens a modal with the rule title, points rate, description, and Shop now button that redirects the user to the general catalog (
/collections/all).Earn points widget: Displays how many points or store credit a customer can earn for purchasing a product right on the product page.
Potential points indicator: Shows customers how many points or store credit they can earn from their purchase directly on the checkout page.
Important considerations and edge cases
Action stacking: A single order can trigger multiple active transactional rules (e.g., Place order, Spend X to get Y, Points per item, etc.) in parallel. If a customer's order meets the criteria for multiple active rules, they will earn rewards for all of them. To learn more about how transactional rules stack and how to manage your reward margins, check out our How to set up rewardable actions guide.
Tax and shipping exclusions edge case: If an order consists only of a single non-eligible product, the product's cost is excluded from the rewardable amount. However, if your global Rewardable amount calculation is configured to include taxes and shipping, the customer will still earn points or store credit for the tax and shipping portion of the order. Learn more about excluding items in our guide on how to exclude customers or products.
Non-retroactive adjustments: Changes to your Reward type or Earning value are forward-looking. Existing orders will keep the settings active at the time they were placed.
Refund recalculations: If an order is fully or partially refunded, the system recalculates or reclaims the issued points or store credits according to the active global calculation settings. For more details on cancellation triggers, see How rewards are calculated, issued, and canceled.
