Overview
The Place XX orders (Punch card) earning rule is a milestone-based loyalty program that rewards customer purchase frequency rather than transaction size. It awards a fixed point value once a customer completes a set number of qualifying orders.
Benefits
It creates a highly engaging, gamified experience for customers. The storefront widget displays a visual progress tracker (e.g., Orders made: 2/5), encouraging repeat business as customers strive to complete their "punch card."
Plan availability
The Place XX orders - Punch card rule is available starting from the Growth plan.
Step-by-step configuration
To enable and configure this rule, follow these steps in your Growave admin:
Navigate to Rewards → Points → Ways to earn.
Click Add ways to earn → Place XX orders - Punch card action (if not already aded) or Edit next to the action title.
Set the Status to Enabled or Disabled using the toggle in the right sidebar.
Configure the main settings described below.
Configure the following fields:
Title: The public name of the action (e.g., Place XX orders - Punch card).
Description: A short explanation showing customers how to earn the reward (e.g., Complete 5 orders to earn bonus points.).
Language: Select the language version of your storefront and translate the title and description. Learn more about multi-language translation.
Action icon: Upload a custom .jpg or .png file (under 10 MB). If left blank, it defaults to the standard shopping cart icon.
Review the How it will work summary box in the right sidebar to verify your settings before clicking Save.
Main settings of the Place XX orders (Punch card) action
Reward type selector not available
This rule exclusively issues Points. Other reward types are not supported.
Reward value (Points rewarded)
Enter the point value issued upon completing the card (e.g., 1000).
Number of orders
Set the required order milestone customers must reach to receive the reward (e.g., 5).
Limit how many times a customer can get a reward
Controls how many times a customer can repeat the entire punch card lifecycle. For example, if set to 2 per lifetime, a customer can complete the 5-order milestone twice (earning rewards twice), after which the rule will show as completed. You can limit repetitions per lifetime, day, week, month, or year.
Set minimum purchase amount
Defines the lowest monetary value an order must meet to qualify as a valid "punch" on the card.
This threshold is validated against the Rewardable amount (which may exclude discounts, gift cards, and store credits, or include taxes and shipping, depending on your global Rewardable amount calculation settings), not the raw subtotal or total.
Excluded product costs: If an order contains an item tagged as excluded from the rewards program, the cost of that item is deducted from the rewardable total before this minimum purchase check is performed. If after deducting the cost, the rewardable amount falls below the minimum purchase amount, the order will not be counted towards the punch card.
Delay the reward
Delays issuing the milestone points for a set number of days after the final qualifying order is placed.
⚠️ Important: If any order updates or status changes occur during this delay period, the delay timer resets.
Available exclusively for customers with listed tags
Restricts the rule to specific customer segments using Shopify customer tags.
⚠️ Important: If a customer does not have the required tag, this rule will be hidden from the storefront widgets and account extension to avoid confusing ineligible users.
Global settings and exclusions impact
Rewardable amount calculation
If the Set minimum purchase amount setting is not enabled, your global Rewardable amount settings alone:
Do not influence the number of points issued for completing the Punch card (a fixed number of points is issued as per your action settings).
Do not influence the reward issuance (whether the punch counts).
Rewards availability (Product exclusions)
Mixed orders: If an order has multiple items, some eligible and some excluded, the reward will be issued (the order will count as a valid punch) since other products in the cart are eligible.
⚠️ Known system limitation: Currently, if a customer places an order containing only a single item that is not eligible, the reward will still be issued (the order will count as a valid punch). See how to exclude customers or products for setup details.
Stacking, limits, and refunds
Action stacking: Orders that count toward the Punch card will still trigger other active transactional rules (like Place order or Spend X) in parallel. To learn more, see the How to set up rewardable actions guide.
Refund recalculations: If an order that counted as a punch is later refunded or voided:
The customer's progress counter is decremented by 1.
If the refund causes a customer's completed card count to drop below the target threshold (e.g., dropping from 5/5 to 4/5) after the points were already issued, the milestone points are reclaimed.
Customer experience
Depending on your Growave plan, the following storefront widgets and account extension can be displayed to customers where they interact with the Punch card action:

Clicking the button opens a modal with the rule title, points value, and Shop now button that redirects the user to the general catalog (
