How to set up the Points per item purchased earning action

Learn how to set up the Points per item purchased earning rule to reward customers based on the quantity of items they buy.

Written by Simon Akhrameev

Overview

The Points per item purchased earning rule allows you to reward customers based on the number of items they buy, rather than the total cost of their cart.

Benefits

  • This rule is ideal for pushing volume. You can award points for every item in a cart, or limit the reward to specific collections or products to clear out inventory or highlight a new line.

  • You can create multiple Points per item purchased rules in your program that do not duplicate conditions.

Plan availability

  • The Points per item purchased rule is available starting from the Growth plan.

Step-by-step configuration

To enable and configure this rule, follow these steps in your Growave admin:

  1. Navigate to Rewards → Points → Ways to earn.

  2. Click the Add ways to earn button in the upper right.

  3. Select Points per item purchased from the list.

  4. Set the Status to Enabled or Disabled using the toggle in the right sidebar.

  5. Configure the following fields:

    • Title: The public name of the action (e.g., Points per item).

    • Description: A short explanation showing customers how to earn the reward.

    • Language: Select the language version of your storefront and translate the title and description. Learn more about multi-language translation.

    • Action icon: Upload a custom .jpg or .png file (under 10 MB) to change the icon shown in the storefront.

  6. Review the How it will work summary box in the right sidebar to verify your settings before clicking Save.

Main settings of the Points per item purchased action

Reward type selector not available

This rule exclusively issues Points by default. Other reward types are not supported.

Reward value (Earning settings)

Define the exact ratio (e.g., "Earn 10 points for every 1 item purchased").

Apply to (Item targeting)

Determine which items qualify for the Points per item purchased action:

  • All orders: Points are awarded for every single item in the cart.

  • Collection: Points are awarded only for items belonging to a specific collection.

  • Product: Points are awarded only for a specific product (selecting product variants is not support).

Limit how many times a customer can get a reward

Controls how often a customer can earn points for this action. You can limit repetitions per lifetime, day, week, month, or year.

Set minimum purchase amount

Defines the lowest order total required to qualify for this reward.

  • Growave checks the Order total (subtotal minus discounts, plus shipping and taxes) to see if it meets this threshold for the Points per item purchase action.

  • If the order contains products excluded from the Rewards program, those products are excluded from the order's total amount.

  • If you have configured specific global exclusions in the Reward amount calculation settings, those exclusions affect how many points are earned on the order, not whether an order qualifies here.

Available exclusively for customers with listed tags

Restricts the rule to specific customer segments using Shopify customer tags.

⚠️ Important: If a customer does not have the required tag, this rule will be hidden from the storefront widgets and account extensions to avoid confusing ineligible users.

Interaction logic

Stacking within this rule type (Internal stacking)

If you create several "Points per item purchased" rules that do not duplicate conditions, a single item can trigger points from all of them.

Example:

  • Rule A: Earn 10 points per item on All orders.

  • Rule B: Earn 5 points per item on Collection: Winter.

  • Result: If a customer buys a scarf from the "Winter" collection, they receive 15 points (10 from Rule A + 5 from Rule B).

Stacking with other rule types (Global stacking)

This rule also stacks with other transactional actions like Place Order or Spend X to get Y. A customer receives the sum of all applicable rewards for their order.

Important limitations

  • Multipliers: Only the VIP tier multiplier is applied to the Points per item purchased rule.

  • Unsupported features: The Rewards for past actions and Delay the reward features are not supported for this rule.

  • Duplicates: You cannot create two rules with identical conditions (e.g., two rules that both apply to "All orders"). The system will prevent you from saving the second rule.

Refunds and excluded products impact

If the order is refunded or contains an item that is not eligible for the Rewards, the Points per item purchased action will work as follows:

  • Refunds: If an order is refunded, points will be deducted based on the specific quantity of eligible products returned. Deduction is controlled by settings under Rewards → Settings → Reward management. If you have not configured the system to cancel rewards upon refund, points will remain in the customer's balance.

  • Excluded product: If a specific product is excluded from the Rewards program (in Rewards → Settings → Rewards availability), points will not be issued for that item. If an order contains only one item that is not eligible for Rewards, the reward will not be issued.

Customer experience

When a customer clicks the Shop now button on this reward card in the storefront or customer account extension, their redirection depends on your "Apply to" settings:

  • All orders: Redirects to the general catalog (/collections/all).

  • Collection: Redirects to the specific collection page.

  • Product: Redirects to the specific product page.

Depending on your Growave plan, the following storefront widgets and account extension can be displayed to customers where they interact with the Points per item purchased action:

  • Rewards pop-up widget: Displays under Points program → How to earn points section with a dedicated card showing the title. On click, unfolds the description with the dynamic Shop now button.

  • Rewards page: Displays in the Ways to earn points grid with a card showing the title and a Shop now button on hover. Clicking the button opens a modal with the rule title, description, and the dynamic Shop now button.

  • Rewards page extension for new customer account pages: Displays in the Ways to earn points grid with a card showing the title and a Shop now link. Clicking the button opens a modal with the rule title, description, and the dynamic Shop now button.
