How to reward for past actions

Learn how to retroactively issue rewards for actions completed before activating the Rewards program or while earning rules were disabled.

Overview

This feature lets you retroactively reward customers for actions completed before you activated the Growave Rewards program or when the specific earning action was disabled, which is a great way to recognize loyalty and boost engagement.


Supported and unsupported actions and reward types

You can reward customers for past actions as long as they match active Ways to earn rules. Each action uses the reward type and value defined in your active rule.

Supported actions:

  • Place order and order-related actions (Punch card, Spend X to get Y, Buy X to get Y)

  • Sign up

  • Subscribe to newsletter

  • Leave review

Supported reward types:

  • Points

  • Amount discount

  • Percentage discount

  • Free shipping

  • Free product

  • Gift card

  • Store credit

Unsupported actions:

  • Points per item purchased

  • Celebrate birthday

  • Follow on... actions (Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube, TikTok, custom channel)

  • Share on... actions (X, Facebook)

  • Share website

  • Custom actions


Before you start

The Rewards for past actions tab will only display qualifying actions within the selected period tied to currently active Ways to earn rules.

⚠️ Important

Before you begin, navigate to RewardsPointsWays to earn and verify that the rules you want to reward retroactively are currently enabled. If an action has been deleted or remains disabled, it will not appear in your past actions list.


How to use Rewards for past actions

  1. In the Growave admin panel, go to Rewards → Settings → Rewards for past actions tab.

  2. Use the Look-up history for selector to choose a time period. You can select preset options (30, 60, or 90 days) or a custom date range using the calendar.

  3. Review the qualifying actions displayed for your selected period.

  4. Click the Reward button for each action you want to reward retroactively. You can reward different actions (e.g., Place order and Leave review) at the same time.

  • The Rewarding in progress: [percent] completed notice will appear. Processing may take some time depending on the number of valid past actions among your customer base for the selected period.

  • Each action is processed independently, and its button will be temporarily disabled until processing completes.

⚠️ Important
Once you click Reward, do not make changes to the corresponding Ways to earn rule (e.g., editing, deactivating, or deleting it). Doing so may cause unexpected results or prevent points from being correctly applied to your customers.

📘 Notes

  • After processing, the same actions for the selected period may remain visible in this tab. If you click Reward again for the same period, Growave will simply skip customers who have already received rewards for past actions for this period.

  • Rewards for past actions do not trigger email notifications.


Where results appear

Once rewards for past actions are processed:

  • Your customers will see their rewards with a note "Reward for past action" on the storefront in the History sections of the Rewards pop-up widget and the Rewards page (available from the Growth plan).

  • You can see rewards issued with this feature in the Growave admin under Customers → [customer profile] → Activity, or under AnalyticsRewards → PointsActivity log.


FAQ

Why don't some past actions appear in the list?

Only actions linked to active Ways to earn rules are displayed in the Rewards for past actions tab. If a rule is disabled or deleted, its related actions won’t appear.

Can I reward customers who haven’t activated their accounts?

No. Signup rewards only apply to customers who have activated their Shopify account via email invite.
To invite them:

  • Go to Shopify admin → Customers

  • Select the customer

  • Click Send account invite

Will customers with no email receive rewards for past actions?

Yes, customers with only a phone number can still be rewarded for the Place order actions.

What happens if I change a Ways to earn rule before rewarding?

  • Only Place order and order-related actions will be recalculated.

  • Other actions (Sign up, Leave review, or Subscribe to newsletter) will not be recalculated.

  • Customers who’ve already received rewards won’t be rewarded again.

  • Previously issued rewards won’t be updated or reversed.

Will the Rewards for past actions count toward VIP Tiers?

No, when using the Earn points milestone, points awarded via this feature do not count toward VIP Tier progress.

Are multiplier settings applied to Rewards for past actions?

Yes. Growave will apply one active multiplier, based on the following priority:

  1. Boost campaigns

  2. Birthday multipliers

  3. VIP Tier multipliers

Are reward delays applied?

No, Delay reward setting in Ways to earn actions is ignored. Rewards for past actions are issued immediately for the valid Ways to earn rules.
