Require customer consent to join the Rewards program

Learn how to enforce customer consent for loyalty program participation and how it impacts the admin panel, storefront, and Shopify POS.

Written by Simon Akhrameev

Overview

The Require customer consent to join the Rewards program setting makes joining your loyalty program opt-in. When enabled, customers must explicitly agree to join before they can access rewards features. By default, this setting is disabled.

Key benefits

  • Ensures compliance with privacy policies.

  • Makes participation in the loyalty program opt-in rather than automatic.

How consent affects earning and redeeming rewards

Enabling the Require customer consent to join the Rewards program setting changes how points and discounts are handled. What happens depends on when the customer joined and, for activity completed before consent, on the type of action.

Existing customers (joined before consent was enabled)

Points and discounts earned or redeemed before you enabled this setting stay safely on the customer's balance. Until these customers provide consent, they cannot:

  • Earn new points or rewards.

  • Redeem existing points for new rewards.

  • Interact with Growave widgets and extensions.

📘 Note: If a customer previously generated and saved a discount code (for example, from a Reward received notification email), they can still apply that code manually at Shopify checkout.

New customers (joined after consent was enabled)

Until a new customer provides consent, they will not earn points or discounts for completing actions and cannot interact with Growave widgets and extensions.

Once the customer gives consent, how Growave handles their earlier activity depends on the action type.

Rewards issued automatically after consent

These actions reflect the customer's current state, so Growave evaluates them at the moment consent is given:

  • Sign up and Subscribe to newsletter are rewarded automatically, provided the action was active before consent and the customer meets the conditions set for that action.

📘Note: Giving consent to take part in the Rewards program is not the same as subscribing to the newsletter. If the customer is not actually subscribed, the Subscribe to newsletter reward is not issued.

  • Default tier is assigned automatically if the default tier is enabled in the VIP Tiers program.

Rewards not issued automatically after consent

These are completed historical events, so consent does not reprocess them. To reward them, use the Rewards for past actions feature:

  • Leave review

  • Place order

  • Place XX orders – Punch card

  • Buy X to get Y

  • Spend X to get Y

  • Points per item purchased

Rewards not issued automatically after consent and not supported by Rewards for past actions

These are completed historical events. They are not rewarded automatically after consent and cannot be issued through Rewards for past actions:

Rewards that cannot be earned before consent

  • Follow on… and Share on… (social actions) cannot be completed before consent, so there is nothing earlier to reward. Customers can earn these only after providing consent.

How to turn on customer consent

  1. In your Growave admin, go to Rewards → Settings → General.

  2. Scroll to Rewards availability.

  3. Turn on Require customer consent to join the Rewards program.

  4. Click Save.

Once saved, consent prompts appear right away, and customers who haven't agreed yet are flagged across your admin panel and online storefront.

Where and how customers give consent

When consent is required to take part in the Rewards programs, a customer who hasn't consented yet is prompted before they can use rewards features. Here's how the prompt appears on each surface.

⚠️ Important: Customer eligibility settings take precedence over consent settings. If a logged-in customer is excluded from your loyalty program using customer eligibility tags, they cannot access the rewards interface and will not see the consent prompt.

On your storefront

  • Rewards pop-up widget and Rewards page: A consent banner displays a Give consent button. Clicking anywhere on the Rewards pop-up widget or Rewards page (except the button itself) triggers a confirmation modal. A customer must click Give consent to unlock the rewards interface.

  • Loyalty info widget: Clicking anywhere on the Loyalty info widget triggers the consent modal.

On Shopify customer account pages (new customer accounts)

In Shopify POS

  • Existing customers with a points balance must give consent in-store via Shopify POS before using rewards features. A cashier must add the customer to the order and tap the Redeem Rewards tile to open the Give consent page.

  • New customers created via a Shopify POS device must provide their consent via the online storefront widgets.

What changes when consent is required

Growave admin panel impacts

Customers who have not consented are flagged, and you cannot manually modify their rewards data until they do. Edits to these fields are blocked under Growave admin panelCustomers[customer profile]:

  • Points balance

  • VIP Tier status

  • Birth date

  • Marketing status

Growave - Customers - Customer profile - Consent not provided - Blocked fields

📘 Note: Growave will display a message on the customer's profile confirming they have not participated. The fields will automatically unlock once the customer provides consent.

Features hidden when consent is required

These Growave features remain hidden until the customer grants consent:

What happens to the imported VIP Tier members

If you import customers into a VIP tier, those without consent are "frozen."

  • Their store activity does not count toward tier advancement.

  • Manual VIP tier changes and recalculations (upgrades, downgrades, Entry rewards) will not apply until explicit consent is provided.

How to export consent data

You can export customer data, including the exact date they provided consent, to assist with targeted email campaigns.

  1. Navigate to AnalyticsRewards and click Create report.

  2. Select the required period.

  3. Check the required data boxes (e.g., Customer ID, Email, Consent accepted at).

  4. Click Create.

📘 Note: Customers who have provided consent will have a timestamp in the Consent accepted at column. An empty field means the customer has not yet consented.
