Require customer consent to join the Rewards program

Learn how to enforce customer consent for loyalty program participation and how it impacts the admin panel, storefront, and Shopify POS.

Written by Simon Akhrameev

Overview

The Require customer consent to join the Rewards program setting makes joining your loyalty program opt-in. When enabled, customers must explicitly agree to join before they can access rewards features. By default, this setting is disabled.

Key benefits

  • Ensures compliance with privacy policies.

  • Makes participation in the loyalty program opt-in rather than automatic.

How consent affects earned rewards

Enabling this setting impacts how points and discounts are handled, depending on when the customer joined.

Existing customers (joined before consent was enabled)

  • Points and discounts earned prior to enabling this setting remain safely on the customer's balance.

  • Customers cannot redeem points for new rewards or interact with Growave widgets and extensions until they provide consent.

📘 Note: If a customer previously generated and saved a discount code (for example, from a Reward received notification email), they can still apply that code manually at the native Shopify checkout.

New customers (joined after consent was enabled)

  • Customers can still complete rewardable actions (such as Sign up or Place order) before giving consent.

⚠️ Important: The rewards for these actions are tracked in the background and are not lost. They will be credited to the customer's visible balance as soon as they provide explicit consent.

How to turn on customer consent

  1. In your Growave admin, go to Rewards → Settings → General.

  2. Scroll to Rewards availability.

  3. Turn on Require customer consent to join the Rewards program.

  4. Click Save.

Once saved, consent prompts appear right away, and customers who haven't agreed yet are flagged across your admin panel and online storefront.

What changes when consent is required

Growave admin panel impacts

Customers who have not consented are flagged, and you cannot manually modify their rewards data until they do. Edits to these fields are blocked under Growave admin panelCustomers[customer profile]:

  • Points balance

  • VIP Tier status

  • Birth date

  • Marketing status

📘 Note: Growave will display a message on the customer's profile confirming they have not participated. The fields will automatically unlock once the customer provides consent.

Storefront impacts (Customer view)

Customers are prompted to provide consent before interacting with rewards features across different surfaces.

⚠️ Important: Customer eligibility settings take precedence over consent settings. If a logged-in customer is excluded from your loyalty program using customer eligibility tags, they cannot access the rewards interface and will not see the consent prompt.

Here is how the prompt appears across storefront features:

Imported VIP Tier members

If you import customers into a VIP tier, those without consent are "frozen."

  • Their store activity does not count toward tier advancement.

  • Manual VIP tier changes and recalculations (upgrades, downgrades, Entry rewards) will not apply until explicit consent is provided.

Shopify POS impacts

  • Existing customers with a points balance must give consent in-store via Shopify POS before using rewards features. A cashier must add the customer to the order and tap the Redeem Rewards tile to open the Give consent page.

  • New customers created via a Shopify POS device must provide their consent via the online storefront widgets to unlock any rewards earned in-store.

How to export consent data

You can export customer data, including the exact date they provided consent, to assist with targeted email campaigns.

  1. Navigate to AnalyticsRewards and click Create report.

  2. Select the required period.

  3. Check the required data boxes (e.g., Customer ID, Email, Consent accepted at).

  4. Click Create.

📘 Note: Customers who have provided consent will have a timestamp in the Consent accepted at column. An empty field means the customer has not yet consented.
