Getting started with Loyalty and Rewards programs

Activate and configure Growave Rewards programs — Points, Referrals, VIP Tiers, and more — from one place.

Written by Simon Akhrameev

Overview

Growave's Loyalty and Rewards programs help you drive repeat purchases, turn shoppers into brand advocates, and reward your best customers with exclusive benefits through earning points, sharing referrals, and reaching VIP status.

This guide is your starting point: it walks you through activating the programs, setting up notifications, configuring the Rewards settings, and branding your widgets, then links out to a detailed guide wherever you want to go deeper.

📘 Note: New to Growave overall? Use the Getting started with Growave guide for store-wide setup (app embeds, customer accounts, onsite widgets), then come back here to configure Rewards in depth.

Activate the Rewards programs

The Growave Rewards app combines three programs you can activate independently:

  • Points: Reward customers for actions like purchases, sign-ups, reviews, and more.

  • Referrals: Let customers invite friends and earn rewards when the friend makes a purchase.

  • VIP Tiers: Group loyal customers into tiers and unlock exclusive benefits and perks.

You can activate or deactivate any of these programs in the Rewards → Settings section of the admin panel. Alternatively, when a program is disabled, a banner on that program's page prompts you to enable it directly.

📖 Learn how to set up each program:

Set up Rewards notifications

Configure Rewards → Notifications to keep customers informed about earning and redeeming points and other rewards-related actions. Notifications are automated emails triggered by specific customer actions in the Rewards app.

Configure Rewards app settings

The Rewards → Settings page has three tabs: General, Rewards for past actions, and Reset Rewards programs. The sections below describe what each tab and setting controls.

General tab

Reward management

The Reward management section controls which sales channels are eligible for rewards and when rewards are issued or canceled based on order status.

  • Manage reward-eligible sales channels: Explicitly allow or forbid rewards on specific platforms (e.g., Online Store, POS, Shop app).

  • Issue reward when order status is one of: Choose which statuses (e.g., Paid, Fulfilled) trigger a reward.

  • Cancel reward when order status is one of: Choose which financial statuses (e.g., Refunded, Voided) cancel a reward.

  • Return points redeemed for discounts: Automatically restore points spent for discounts if an order is cancelled or fully refunded.

Reward amount calculation

The Reward amount calculation setting determines how the number of earned points is calculated from an order's value. You can check boxes to Exclude discounts, Exclude gift cards, Exclude store credit, Include taxes, and Include shipping. The result is the "rewardable amount" — the total eligible sum used to calculate earned points.

Rewards availability

The Rewards availability section controls who can participate in your Rewards programs and how rewards behave. This section includes several individual settings:

Determine which customers and products are eligible

  • Specify customers eligibility and Specify products eligibility: Use customer or product tags in Shopify to Allow or Forbid participation in the Rewards programs for tagged customers or products. 📖 Learn more about eligibility settings in this guide.

    • Show Rewards widgets to guests: This option appears only when Specify customers eligibility is enabled. By default, restricting customer eligibility hides the Rewards programs from guests until they log in. Turning on Show Rewards widgets to guests displays the Rewards widgets to guests anyway, but access and rewards still remain subject to your eligibility settings, therefore showing the widgets does not let ineligible guests earn or redeem.

Manage who can earn points

Choose between two options:

  • All customers (members and guests): Guests and all account holders (new and legacy) can earn points. Guests must create an account to redeem rewards.

  • Members (legacy accounts only): Only logged-in customers with legacy accounts can earn points. Note that if you use new customer accounts with this option, both members and guests will still earn points; to restrict earning for specific groups, use customer eligibility instead.

Allow customers to refund rewards redeemed with points

Enable self-refund so customers can cancel an unused discount and automatically get their points back.

Require customer consent to join the Rewards program

Make joining your Rewards program opt-in by displaying a consent request in the Rewards pop-up widget and on the Rewards page. Customers can't earn or redeem rewards until they give consent.

This setting is disabled by default, and when enabled it also affects the admin panel, imported VIP Tier members, and Shopify POS (Point of Sale). Points already earned aren't lost — existing balances are preserved, and rewards from actions taken before consent are credited once the customer opts in.

Points decimal precision and rounding

Growave provides two settings that control how point values are displayed and rounded:

  • Select decimal precision for points controls how many decimal places (0, 1, or 2) customers see in point balances. It affects display only — it does not change how points are calculated or stored.

Growave - Rewards - Settings - Decimal precision
  • Round points or store credit earned from the Place order action before multipliers controls how Growave handles fractional values for the Place order rule before any multipliers (Birthday, Boost campaign, or VIP tier) are applied.

Points expiry

Points expiry lets you set a points expiration period (in days), enable a first notification and a last-chance reminder before points expire.

B2B Points program status

B2B Points program status is the switch that enables or disables the B2B Points program — an independent loyalty program for Shopify B2B company accounts, separate from the retail Points program. Members of the same company share a single points balance and reward pool.

Loyalty QR and Wallet

Loyalty QR and Wallet lets customers use QR codes or barcodes to earn points and redeem rewards at your physical store, and lets them save their loyalty pass to Apple Wallet and Google Wallet. Here you can enable Loyalty QR, choose between 1D barcodes and 2D QR codes, and enable the Add to Wallet button.

Referral channels

Referral channels let you activate the social channels customers can use to share their referral link, for example, Facebook, X, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Email, and Pinterest, and set the default message added when a referring customer shares their link via email.

Fraud detection

Fraud detection section lets you add an email address to receive notifications about suspicious referral activity (such as self-referrals).

From here you can also configure:

  • VIP Tier enrollment: Choose how progress is tracked (Look up activity from the first order, Current year, Update tier progress based on recent activity, or Specific date).

  • VIP Tier rewarding frequency: Choose between Reward only once or Reward on every tier update.

Rewards for past actions tab

The Rewards for past actions tab lets you retroactively reward loyal customers for actions they completed before the Growave Rewards programs were activated.

Reset Rewards programs tab

The Reset Rewards programs tab lets you reset the Points and/or VIP Tiers program progress — including the rewards and discounts generated — within a period you specify.

Growave - Rewards - Settings - Reset Rewards programs

⚠️ Important

When you reset the Points or VIP Tiers program and also choose to reset discounts, all associated discounts are removed from the Growave platform, so customers no longer see them in the Rewards widget or on the Rewards page. However, the corresponding discount database entries are not deleted from Shopify.

Customize Rewards branding

Users of Growave 2.0 (those who joined after January 22, 2024) can customize the Rewards programs’ branding — the general appearance, the Rewards launcher, and the Rewards pop-up widget — to match their store's style.

Go to Branding → Rewards to adjust colors, fonts, icons, the launcher, and the pop-up widget.
