Reward customers with free products

🚀 Feature availability

The Free product reward is available starting from the Entry plan.

Growave allows your customers to earn free products by performing rewardable actions and exchanging collected points in the Points program. You can also reward customers with free products for achieving VIP Tiers and set free products as rewards for both referring customers and referred friends in the Referral program.

⚠️ Important

Products priced at $0.00 in Shopify cannot be used as a Free product reward. Growave requires a positive product price to apply a discount (e.g., 100% off) to make the item free.

  • Initial setup: You cannot select a product priced at $0.00 when creating a new rule.

  • Price changes: If you change an active reward product's price to $0.00 in Shopify, Growave performs the following automatic actions to prevent errors:

    • Ways to earn & Ways to redeem: The specific rule is disabled. If you attempt to re-enable the rule without changing the associated product or its price, you will see an error message: "Product variant price must be greater than 0 for free product discount."

    • VIP tiers: The specific tier is disabled.

    • Referral program: The reward setting switches to No reward.

  • Best practice: If your product price is set to $0.00, you must either choose a different product for the reward or reinstate a positive price for the item in Shopify. Avoid setting extremely low prices (e.g., $0.01), as savvy shoppers might find the direct link and purchase the item cheaply without redeeming points.


Free product in the Points program

  1. Go to RewardsPoints tab → Ways to redeem section and click the "Add ways to redeem" button.

  2. Choose the Free product option from the available rewards.

  3. Click the "Choose product" button to select the product and its variants (if any), and set up the discount name.

  4. Set the points price required to redeem the product and indicate the discount value:

    • Example: If you enter 90% in this field, the customer will pay 10% of the product's price.

  5. Define customer eligibility using a special tag, and set the reward expiration in days.

    • When Set reward lifetime is enabled, the following three options will appear: First notification before reward expire, Last chance reminder before reward expire, and Refund points when discount expires.

  6. Click the "Save" button to finalize the rule.

How customers can redeem their Free product reward with points

From the Rewards pop-up widget

  • Click the Rewards pop-up launcher button.

  • Select How to spend points menu.

  • Find the Free product reward and click its card.

  • Chose product variant (if any) and click Redeem.

  • Click Checkout to proceed.

From the Rewards page

  • Navigate to the Rewards page.

  • Scroll to Ways to spend points section.

  • Find the Free product reward and click its card.

  • Chose product variant (if any) and click Redeem.

  • After successful redemption, the page automatically scrolls to the Available rewards section.

  • Click Checkout on the redeemed Free product card to proceed.

⚠️ Important

How product variants are handled depends on which program the Free product reward is used in:

  • Points program (Ways to redeem): You can select a product with multiple variants during the rule setup. When a customer exchanges their points for this reward, they will be able to select their preferred variant from a dropdown menu directly in the Rewards pop-up widget or Rewards page.

  • VIP Tiers and Referral programs: Because these rewards are issued automatically when a customer reaches a tier or completes a referral, you can only link the Free product reward to one specific product variant. Customers will receive that exact variant automatically and cannot choose from a dropdown.

Free product can be selected as a reward in the Ways to earn section as well.

Go to RewardsPointsWays to earn and click the "Add ways to earn" button. Choose the earning action and select Free product as the Reward type


Free product in the Referral program

  1. Go to Rewards Referral Program tab and click Edit in the Referred friend or Referring customer sections.

  2. Select Free product as the Reward type.

  3. Choose a product, click Add.

  4. Set discount value and reward lifetime.

    • When Set reward lifetime is enabled, the following three options will appear: First notification before reward expire, Last chance reminder before reward expire, and Refund points when discount expires.

  5. Click Save.

Free product in the VIP Tiers program

A free product can be set as an entry reward for achieving a VIP tier.

  1. Go to RewardsVIP Tiers tab, choose the existing tier, or click the "Add tier" button.

  2. Choose a Free product in the Entry reward section.

  3. Click Browse and select the product you want to give away for achieving the tier.

  4. Set discount value and reward lifetime.

    • When Set reward lifetime is enabled, the following three options will appear: First notification before reward expire, Last chance reminder before reward expire, and Refund points when discount expires.

  5. Click Save to finish.

Free product and discount combinations

The Free product reward can be combined with other discount types. You can choose to allow discount combinations when setting up free product as a reward in the Points, VIP Tiers, and Referrals programs.
