Integrating Growave with Grapevine Post Purchase Surveys

Reward customers in Growave for completing a Grapevine survey using Shopify Flow and Growave's Customer metafield action.

Written by Simon Akhrameev

Overview

Grapevine Post Purchase Survey lets Shopify merchants collect post-purchase feedback, attribution data ("How did you hear about us?"), NPS/CSAT responses, and other customer insights through surveys embedded in the customer journey.

By connecting Grapevine Post Purchase Survey with Growave through Shopify Flow, you can automatically reward customers for completing a survey. This gives shoppers a stronger incentive to share feedback and zero-party data while helping your brand collect more responses and richer customer insights.

Example use case

  • A cosmetics brand runs a post-purchase survey asking how a customer discovered the brand, whether they are satisfied with their purchase, or what their main skincare concern is.

  • Once the customer completes the survey, Grapevine Surveys triggers a Shopify Flow workflow that sets a customer metafield (for example, custom.survey_completed = true).

  • Growave detects this metafield update and automatically awards loyalty points or discounts for completing the survey.

  • Your store improves survey completion rates while connecting survey participation directly to your loyalty program, and you can use the collected insights for attribution, segmentation, personalization, and future marketing campaigns.

Plan requirements

  • Growave: Growth plan or higher (required for the Customer metafield earning action).

  • Shopify: Any plan with access to Shopify Flow.

  • Grapevine Surveys: Installed and active (paid plan) on your Shopify store with Shopify Flow integration enabled (see Grapevine's guide on sending survey data into Shopify Flow).

How the integration works

Grapevine Surveys includes a native Response completed trigger in Shopify Flow. When a customer finishes your survey:

  1. Grapevine Surveys captures the submission and triggers the Response completed event in Shopify Flow.

  2. Shopify Flow checks that the customer exists, verifies which survey was completed (using the surveyCode), and runs the Update customer metafield action to set a dedicated metafield (for example, custom.survey_completed = true).

  3. Growave monitors that customer metafield via the Customer metafield earning action and automatically issues the configured reward once the value matches.

Step 1: Create a customer metafield definition in Shopify

Create a dedicated boolean (True or false) customer metafield in Shopify so Shopify Flow and Growave can reference it.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings → Metafields and metaobjects → Customers.

  2. Click Add definition.

  3. Enter a Name (for example, Survey completed) and verify the Namespace and key (for example, custom.survey_completed).

  4. Click Select type and choose True or false (Boolean).

  5. Turn on Read and write access under Customer Account API so apps can read and update the metafield.

  6. Click Save.

Step 2: Set up the Customer metafield action in Growave

Configure Growave to issue a reward when the customer metafield is updated to true.

  1. In your Growave admin panel, go to Rewards → Points → Ways to earn.

  2. Click Add ways to earn and select Customer metafield.

  3. Configure the action details:

    • Reward type and value: Choose the reward you want to grant (such as Points, Discount, Fixed store credit, Free shipping, Free product, or Gift card) and specify the amount.

    • Customer metafield namespace and key: Enter the exact namespace and key from Step 1 (for example, custom.survey_completed).

    • Set Metafield value type to Boolean, Metafield condition to Equals, and Metafield value to True.

    • Title: Enter the action name shown to customers (for example, Complete our Survey).

  4. Click Save.

Step 3: Create the workflow in Shopify Flow

Before building the workflow, make sure you have created a survey in Grapevine Surveys admin and note the Survey code for the survey you want to reward.

Grapevine Surveys - Survey code

📖 For full details, refer to Grapevine's guide on sending survey data into Shopify Flow

  1. In your Shopify admin, open Apps → Flow and click Create workflow.

  2. Select a trigger: Click Select a trigger, search for Grapevine Surveys, and select the Response completed trigger.

Shopify Flow - Create workflow - Select trigger - Grapevine Surveys - Response completed
  3. Check that the customer exists:

    • Click the Plus (+) icon under the trigger → select Condition.

    • Click Add variable and set the condition to verify that the customer's ID (customerId) is greater than 0.0 (so the workflow only runs for identifiable Shopify customers).

Shopify flow - Add condition - Customer ID is greater than 0
  4. Filter by survey code (recommended):

💡 Tip: We recommend filtering by Survey code (surveyCode) rather than Survey name (surveyName). Survey names can be edited or renamed later, whereas the survey code remains constant and prevents your workflow from breaking.

    • If you want to reward customers for completing a specific survey, click the Plus (+) icon (under True) → select Condition.

    • Add a variable for Survey code (surveyCode), set the operator to Equal to, and enter your unique survey code from Grapevine Surveys.

Shopify flow - Add condition - Survey code
  5. Update the customer metafield:

    • Click the Plus (+) icon (under True) → select Action.

    • Select Shopify → Update customer metafield.

    • Enter the following expression in the Customer field: gid://shopify/Customer/{{ customerid | round }}

    • Select your metafield (custom.survey_completed), set the Type to Boolean, and set the Value to True.

  6. Name your workflow (for example, Reward for completing a Grapevine survey) and click Turn on workflow in the top-right corner.

Testing the workflow

To verify that everything works as expected:

  1. Complete the Grapevine survey on your store using a test customer account/email address.

  2. In your Shopify admin, open Customers and select the test customer profile. Confirm that the Survey completed metafield is set to True.

  3. In Growave admin, go to Rewards → Customers, open the test customer's profile, and verify that the reward was issued under their activity history.
